Medical Marijuana won’t be sold in Escondido. The city voted Wednesday to ban marijuana dispensaries.

Marijuana advocate Stephen Wheeler is disappointed in his city government. He says the city agreed to a 45 day review of the issue, but the city council meeting didn’t hold up to its end of the bargain, and he is outraged.

“Two of the city members admitted to me that the comprehensive review did not occur. It’s frustating,” said Wheeler.

FOX 5 tried to contact several city council members but none of them returned calls or emails.

The city argued that marijuana dispensaries would increase local crime and set a bad example for youth. Wheeler said he arrived at the meeting with proposals to address both issues.

“Secure the building with 1-ton safes, secure windows and doors with bars and put in surveillance cameras,” said Wheeler.

But opponents of the dispensaries say distributing marijuana for any purpose is a bad idea with or without the added security measures.

“It’s an addictive drug, and it does nothing for you,” said Ian MacDonald.
